Marcrete é uma solução de revestimento de paredes ou pavimentos caracterizada pela combinação de mármore e betão. Este material é, fundamentalmente, constituído por fragmentos de mármore rejeitados pela indústria extrativa localizada no Anticlinal de Estremoz, Alentejo. Actualmente, o desperdício produzido por esta indústria representa 80-90% da pedra natural extraída, atingindo um valor estimado de 50 milhões de toneladas de mármore acumulado inutilizado.
A solução apresentada combina as propriedades estéticas do mármore, como a grande variedade tonal e expressão autêntica, com a resistência e durabilidade características do betão. Para além disso, esta proposta pretende integrar o design de produto com as exigências tecnológicas deste tipo de material construtivo.
Ao invés do abando e sucessiva desvalorização comercial da matéria extraída, o (re-)uso deste mármore procura assegurar a sustentabilidade do ciclo de produção da indústria extrativa. Marcrete pretende, desta forma, ser catalisador do reaproveitamento da pedra natural, uma vez que, o seu princípio produtivo pode, no futuro, ser aprofundado e aplicado no desenvolvimento de outros produtos igualmente inovadores.

Marcrete is a covering wall and floor solution, characterized by the combination of marble and concrete. This material is mainly composed by marble fragments rejected from the extractive industry located in Estremoz Anticline (Portugal). Still today, the waste produced, represents 80-90% of all natural stone exploited by this industry, which as been estimated in more than 50 million unused tons of marble.
The solution presented combines the aesthetic properties of marble, its tonal and authentic expression, with the strength and durability that characterize concrete. Furthermore, this proposal presented intends to integrate an innovative design approach, with the technological demands related with the conception of this type of building material.
Instead of abandonment and subsequent commercial devaluation of the accumulated matter, the re-use of the discarded marble seeks, to ensure the sustainability of the production cycle of this large-scale industry. Finally, the production principle of Marcrete may, in the future, be further developed and applied into new design products that enhance the potential of this resource.
